3 Key Considerations When Choosing Goal Posts

by Todd West

Soccer can be all fun and games until you have to choose equipment for your team. Whether it's for a school, a facility or even your kids' home play, choosing the right equipment for your team is crucial in a game of soccer. However, the process of selecting the equipment is not always straightforward, especially if you are doing it for the first time. Goal posts, for instance, are critical when it comes to soccer. They are made of different types, and it's imperative to get the right one for your team. Below are the things to consider when selecting the goal posts.

Size

As a general rule of thumb, you need to choose the size of the goal post based on the age of the players. This is because players need to use goal posts that are appropriate for their height. There are standard guidelines by soccer authorities on goal post sizes for different ages, which you can easily find online. If you are unsure about the online directions, you can consult the soccer league authorities in your area or the soccer coach of a local school.

Material

Goal posts are available in aluminium, steel and plastic. Aluminium goal posts are light, which means they are easy to move around. Aluminium won't rust, making the posts durable and very easy to maintain. However, all these benefits come at a relatively higher price than other goal post materials. Aluminium is also more likely to suffer dents. Steel, on the other hand, is durable and robust. However, it may rust with time and tends to be very heavy, which can be a challenge if you have to move the posts. If you go for steel, consider padding, especially in the lower sections of the posts to minimise the risk of injuries to players who may run into them. Steel is also cheaper. Plastic is another option to consider and is best suited for temporary use, such as in practice or for home use.

Type

Once you've decided on the size and material of the goal post, you can then consider the specific types, which are usually made to suit different purposes. Freestanding, socketed, and self-weighted posts are the main types you will find. Socketed goal posts are the most popular. The posts are installed in ground sockets, which means no additional anchorage is necessary. They are ideal for areas such as schools where the posts are left in position for a considerable period of time.  As the name implies, freestanding goal posts stand on the ground on their own. For this reason, they require anchorage. They are best suited for a synthetic field where there's need to minimise damage. Last, the self-weighted posts have the same configuration as freestanding posts but come with an extra fixed weight and wheels on the back bar for portability. No anchorage is needed due to the extra weight, and these are best suited for use when there is need to move the posts in and out of position more frequently.

About Me

Operating a Processing and Manufacturing Facility

Hello, my name is Freddie. While I do not actually work in the processing or manufacturing sector, I do have a lot of knowledge about it. I gained this knowledge during one long summer when I helped my cousin who owns a processing and manufacturing facility located in Sydney, Australia. On my first day, I really didn't have a clue what he produced or how the facility worked. However, as the weeks passed and I got to know everyone in the different departments, my understanding grew. I decided to start this blog so I could share my knowledge with others.
